Onyx Group achieves ISO 27001 standard across data centre network

National IT provider Onyx Group says that its Sheffield data centre has achieved the ISO 27001 standard. This means that all of the company’s five data centres have now achieved the ISO recognition, reaffirming the company’s commitment to managing information security.

The ISO standard is awarded to companies who can demonstrate that the necessary controls are in place to address confidentiality, integrity and the availability of information. Onyx Group was one of the first companies to achieve ISO accreditation when its Newcastle data centre was recognised with the standard almost ten years ago.

Neil Stephenson, CEO at Onyx Group commented: “Our core focus as a business is to protect our customers’ data by providing secure data centre and cloud computing environments.

“The achievement of the ISO standard gives us formal recognition for the quality service we deliver to our customers and is something that sets us apart from other providers in the South Yorkshire region.”

New research commissioned by the Department for Business Innovation & Skills has revealed that 93 per cent of large organisations and 87 per cent of small businesses (up from 76 per cent in 2011) had a security breach last year.

Stephenson continued: “Businesses have reported that their worst security breaches of the year cost an average of £35k - £65K. This reinforces the need for the necessary tools to protect sensitive data and ensure business continuity, as businesses that fail to do so can suffer from reputational damage and significant loss of revenue.”

The achievement of the ISO standard comes at a time when organisations, such as housing associations, are faced with increasingly stringent compliance requirements. Many of these companies are choosing to outsource the responsibility of protecting confidential data to providers such as Onyx Group.

Established in 1994, Onyx Group is a real success story that has grown from a regional, home grown IT company to a national technology provider with sites throughout the UK including London, Glasgow, Edinburgh, Newcastle, Teesside and Sheffield. This includes five fully owned data centres and six workplace recovery facilities.
