Sysadmin Awards launched by Melbourne

Melbourne Server Hosting, the agile provider of complex cloud and managed server hosting solutions based in Manchester, has launched a competition to encourage us to show our appreciation for Systems Administrators, the guys who keep the world’s IT working.

Systems Administrators or Sysadmins are the people who maintain an organisation’s software and hardware. They can be responsible for anything from a group of PCs to whole clusters of servers and for ensuring staff can access their files, their network and their applications at all times of the day and night.

Melbourne’s Socially Awesome Sysadmin Awards for 2014 are designed to recognise the people who carry out this largely unheralded yet hugely important job.

Rob Greenwood, Technical Services Manager for Melbourne, said: “The poor Sysadmins are the ones who get the blame for any IT failure yet keep smiling despite having to deal with hapless colleagues. We call them the 408th emergency service and wanted to find a way to reward the way they keep businesses running smoothly. So we decided to have a bit of fun and recognise the way that despite all the knockbacks, they still happily chat and share their knowledge via Twitter.”

Among the Socially Awesome Sysadmin Awards up for grabs from Melbourne are: The Sir Tweet Alot Award, for the Sysadmin who tweets most; Mr or Mrs Quotable - who is re-tweeted the most; the “I’m Big in Japan” Award – who has the most Japanese followers; and The Sweary Mary Award – who uses the most foul language.

The list of awards is updated fortnightly with new categories and can be found here: http://www.melbourne.co.uk/socially-awesome-sysadmin-awards-2014

Awards will be given away every month in the run up to Friday 25th July which is known globally as System Administrator Appreciation Day. Prizes will feature craft beer!
