Seagate Technology plc says that Scality, an industry leader in petabyte-scale object storage, is the latest in a growing list of partners developing solutions based on the Seagate Kinetic Open Storage platform. Scality’s award-winning software-only storage solution, the Scality RING, now integrates the Kinetic Open Storage platform for an all new scale-out storage solution.
Developed for large-scale cloud service providers, financial services and media customers, the Seagate Kinetic Open Storage platform fueled Scality solution offers better performance and significantly lower total cost of ownership by eliminating the storage server tier in the data center.
“Storage capacity continues to shift to the cloud. Global data center IP traffic is projected to exceed 7.7 zettabytes by the end of 20171 creating additional challenges for supporting and managing data. Software-Defined Storage has the potential to revolutionise the data center and we are pleased to be working with Scality, a global leader in object-based storage solutions, to help realize the potential of the Seagate Kinetic Open Storage platform,” said Kaustubh Das, vice president, Seagate Cloud and Advanced Storage.
“The Software-Defined Data Center represents a complete rethinking of the data center, in order to deliver an architecture that is truly at the service of applications, and at the same time, achieves better reliability and performance at dramatically lower cost than the traditional data center,” said Jerome Lecat, CEO, Scality. “This kind of fundamental rethinking requires real innovation, not just the evolutionary incrementalism of yesterday’s technologies. The Seagate Kinetic Open Storage platform represents exactly the kind innovation required to achieve the full promise of the Software-Defined Data Center. We are extremely excited to work with Seagate to make this vision a reality.”
The new Seagate Kinetic fueled Scality RING software is currently being tested in the Rausch Netzwerktechnik Bigfoot Object Storage Solution (BOSS), aimed at scale-out cloud customers. The first functional Kinetic fueled system in Europe, the BOSS 4U chassis houses 72 HDDs giving 288 TB per 4U or 2.8 PB per rack. Each hard disk drive has two 1/Gb Ethernet ports which are accessed via a traditional form factor hard disk drive interface connected to an Ethernet switch on the backplane of the system. BOSS will be demonstrated at World Hosting Days 2014 starting today.
