TE Connectivity helps Siemens Wind Power gear up to the New Energy Age

Siemens Wind Power is a leading supplier of high-quality wind turbines and related services to onshore, coastal and offshore sites with 30 years of experience as a major innovator in the industry. From the Wind Power headquarters in Brande, Denmark and locations around the world more than 6,100 dedicated employees are helping to meet tomorrow’s energy needs while protecting the environment.

As demand for clean power generation has increased, Siemens Wind Power has expanded its production and office facilities significantly over the past few years. At the same time, the company has invested more than 804 million Euros in Denmark since 2004 and has created 5,200 new jobs making it one of the biggest inward investors and employers in the country.

During this period of phenomenal development, it became clear that the existing data center at Siemens Wind Power lacked the capacity to accommodate the organization’s rapid expansion as a business. In 2009, Siemens Wind Power took the decision to invest in a brand new data center to support its ambitious growth plans. The search was on for a technology partner who could come up with the right technology and project management skills to deliver a high performance yet energy efficient data center environment quickly and cost-effectively. Increased storage capacity, greater network redundancy, higher security levels and the ability to run the latest 10Gb/s Ethernet applications were key selection criteria.

Throughout the evaluation process, TE Connectivity worked closely with local Network, Design and Install (NDI) partner Jansson EL to meet with Siemens Wind Power and propose a technology solution that best met the customer’s exact requirements. After a thorough review of the marketplace, Siemens Wind Powerselected TE Connectivity for superior product quality and the availability of local support through Jansson EL.

Siemens Wind Power was impressed by the collaborative approach of the two companies, their dedication throughout the sales process and their conscientious commitment to achieving the specific objectives of the project in terms of product, support and aggressive timelines.

For example, speed of deployment was of paramount importance to Siemens Wind Power who were concerned with reducing cost of ownership and achieving a tangible return on investment (ROI) from day one. Great teamwork, coupled with the unique modular nature of TE Connectivity’s solutions, accelerated implementation times and were fundamental to the success of the project. The new 400m2 data center was fully operational in February 2010, just three months after Siemens Wind Power first purchased TE Connectivity equipment in November 2009!

During that period, Jansson EL installed a wide range of modules from TE Connectivity’s AMP NETCONNECT portfolio including 6,000 Category 6A cables across the customer’s office premises and a further 3,000 Category 6A cables in the new data center building. The original technical specification for Category 5E cabling was upgraded on the advice of TE Connectivity, a simple change which gave Siemens Wind Power the opportunity to run the latest 10 Gb/s Ethernet applications from the outset, essential for future-proofing the new data center.

As a company committed to the environment, Siemens Wind Power was equally concerned with applying a green approach to the construction of its data center. From the start, TE Connectivity promised to deliver tangible benefits in terms of reduced equipment footprint with easy-to-install, high density solutions that require less space for patch panels and use less floor space for racks, cabinets and servers.

By using TE Connectivity’s AMP NETCONNECT cable management platform, Jansson EL was able to route the maximum number of cables very compactly with minimum congestion across the customer’s premises. This unique functionality went a long way to saving premium space, keeping the offices clean and tidy and making the data center aesthetically pleasing. Most importantly, from a business case perspective, the superior quality of TE Connectivity’s technology guaranteed high performance without having to buy a large number of products.

Today, Siemens Wind Power has a state-of-the-art, scalable data center that is ready to deliver the latest high-speed applications quickly and securely. It is also capable of handling rapid business expansion. Siemens Wind Power – along with Denmark – is reputed to be the global hub for wind power technology development. To address the constant challenge of finding innovative and renewable alternatives to solve the energy crisis and save the planet at the same time, Siemens Wind Power has ambitious plans to invest in new production facilities.

So impressed has Siemens Wind Power been with the new data center that it is already looking to TE Connectivity to expand its deployment to cover all the company’s offices and additional data centers in the future. Category 6A technology will be a key element, underlining Siemens Wind Power’s commitment to delivering the latest high-speed, bandwidth hungry applications whenever and wherever they are required.

With TE Connectivity’s help, Siemens Wind Power is well placed to gear up to the new energy age and tackle it head on.
