SEGA Networks adopts PernixData FVP™ Software to optimise Gaming Service Platform

SEGA Networks Co., Ltd. will adopt PernixData FVP™ software to accelerate the storage performance of its gaming service platform. By removing storage performance bottlenecks, FVP will enable Sega to better handle player information and support playing devices like smart phones and tablets.

“We appreciate the ability to de-couple storage performance from capacity using PernixData FVP software,” said Kyohei Aso, IT Management of SEGA Networks. “This not only delivers the best performance for our applications, but it helps us substantially reduce storage costs by consolidating servers and avoiding unnecessary storage purchases.”

SEGA Networks Co., Ltd. relies on VMware vSphere to ensure the reliability and stability of its gaming service platform system. This enables them to consolidate highly complex MS SQL databases, reducing the number of physical servers in their environment. However, the company was concerned that storage read and write bottlenecks would hamper the performance of their virtualised databases.

SEGA Networks Co., Ltd. turned to PernixData FVP software to solve their virtualised database performance challenges. FVP virtualises flash and RAM across servers to create a clustered pool of high-speed resources that accelerate reads and writes to shared storage. By putting storage intelligence into servers, PernixData FVP decouples storage performance from storage capacity for faster virtualised applications, unlimited IOPS (where and when they are needed), and 90 percent lower storage costs.

“The most impressive part of FVP is its unique ability to accelerate both read and write traffic,” said Kyosuke Watanabe, director of IT Management of SEGA Networks. “As 80 percent of our database traffic is composed of writes, a read-only solutions was not suitable for our environment.”

With PernixData in place, SEGA Networks Co., Ltd. estimates they will be able to migrate at least 80 percent of their MS SQL databases from physical to virtual. Other anticipated benefits of PernixData FVP include:
· 50 percent overall improvement in database performance (i.e. read/write latency)
· The ability to cost effectively scale-out storage performance as additional servers are introduced
· Major cost savings with the ability to de-couple storage performance and capacity
· Tight integration with VMware environment and the ability to give customers complete confidence that their software can be deployed in all modern vSphere environments, using the familiar tools and procedures to which they are accustomed

The SEGA Networks Co., Ltd deal was sold in conjunction with Networld corporation, PernixData’s IT infrastructure solution distributor in Japan.

“We continue to see very strong demand for decoupled storage architectures in the Japanese market,” said Shoichi Morita, CEO of Networld Corporation. “As SEGA Networks Co., Ltd. demonstrates, there is a huge opportunity for PernixData FVP to change how Japanese companies deliver and manage strategic applications like virtualised databases.”

“PernixData is consistently chosen by marquis enterprises as a fast, reliable and cost effective way to virtualise more databases by eliminating storage performance bottlenecks,” said Jeff Aaron, vice president of marketing at PernixData. “We are pleased to be chosen by such a prestigious company as a key enabler for their core business initiatives.”
