Sutherland Asbill & Brennan LLP make a case for copy data virtualisation

International law firm with offices in London expands the use of Actifio across the organisation.

After an initial project, Sutherland Asbill & Brennan LLP, the law firm has now adopted Actifio for all of its data protection.

Engaged to complete a file-system move between data centres and to protect the firms accounting system for six months, Sutherland Asbill & Brennan LLP decided to expand its use of Actifio’s copy data virtualisation technology for complete data protection across the organisation.

The firm required a 70-terabyte file system to be moved from the firm’s data centre in Virginia to Atlanta. Completing this physically would result in significant downtime for the firm. The litigation-type data - millions and millions of small files - meant that a typical backup to tape and restore would've taken too long. There was also a critical need to protect a legacy accounting system that didn’t have any built-in data protection.

To assist with the move, Sutherland Asbill & Brennan LLP deployed Actifio’s Copy Data Virtualisation technology. Copy data virtualisation frees organisations’ data from their legacy physical infrastructure and as a result reducing storage costs up to 80%. At the same time, it makes virtual copies of ‘production quality' data available immediately to everyone in the business that needs it.

"When we started the demos, it quickly became apparent that we could use Actifio for so much more," said David Tefft, Sutherland Asbill & Brennan LLP’s director of network operations. "Restoration times were fast, allowing us to meet RTO and RPO requirements that we struggled to meet with traditional backup. For our next budgeting cycle, we expanded the capacity to take over everything else, and we pulled out our older backup system entirely. We've now run all our infrastructure on Actifio for about nine months."

“In the case of Sutherland Asbill & Brennan LLP, the initial project highlighs what impact our technology within an organisation can have. Recovery times have increased significantly and virtual copies are now being used to test virtual machines quickly and easily,” said Greg Scorziello, General Manager, EMEA. “By eliminating physical copy data, storage capacity is reduced – and along with it, all the attendant management and infrastructure overheads. The net result is a streamlined and more competitive organisation.”
