Seagate offers Lustre choice for HPC users

Seagate Technology will incorporate Intel Enterprise Edition for Lustre® (IEEL), a big data software platform, into its market-leading ClusterStor® storage architecture for high-performance computing (HPC). The move will strengthen Seagate’s HPC data storage product line and provide customers with an additional choice of Lustre parallel file systems to help drive advancements in the HPC and big data market.

Lustre software is a Linux-based, open-source parallel file system at the heart of most HPC storage systems, and powers 40 percent of the world’s fastest supercomputers. Seagate incorporates this software within the broader Seagate ClusterStor architecture. To date, both Seagate and Intel have managed their own Lustre distributions based on the Open SFS community release, with both companies providing the benefit of additional levels of testing and complementary software capabilities.

Through this new collaboration, Seagate will now adopt IEEL as its baseline Lustre distribution, bringing together the capabilities of the two leading Lustre distributions, development and support teams. The Lustre community, in turn, will benefit from two leading corporations collaborating to further advance the Lustre community roadmap.

“This collaboration represents the leader in storage technology teaming up with the leader in compute technology to drive innovation in the data center,” said Ken Claffey, vice president and general manager, Seagate HPC systems business. “Driving the growth of HPC is a key focus for both companies. This focus reflects how we see the data center of the future evolving — and together, we can achieve more. Intel’s commitment to the development of Lustre is outstanding. Adopting Intel’s distribution will help harmonize efforts, and benefit our customers and the community.”

Seagate will incorporate IEEL into ClusterStor L300, the industry’s highest-performing Lustre software based storage architecture. Released at Supercomputing 2015, the L300 delivers up to 112 gigabytes-per-second (GB/sec) throughput per rack when integrated with Seagate’s ClusterStor HPC drives, and includes features to help maximize reliability and reduce data center footprint, power and cooling costs while simplifying management and service. ClusterStor L300 with IEEL will also support Intel’s Omni-Path network built for Exascale computing.
