AMS-IX expands its platform into Equinix AM6

Internet Exchange prepares for strong growth with 12th location.

AMS-IX (Amsterdam Internet Exchange) is expanding its platform into Equinix AM6 in the Amstel Business Park location in Amsterdam. “We want to prepare our Internet Exchange for future traffic and customer growth. That’s why it is important to expand our platform into a 12th location,” says Henk Steenman, Chief Technical Officer at AMS-IX. Equinix is a logical choice for the expansion. “We’ve been working with Equinix since 2008 and they have proven to be a valuable and reliable partner.” Production of the Point of Presence (PoP) is set for the second quarter of 2016.

Need for new location
The Internet continues to grow: in 2015, the overall Internet traffic volume at AMS-IX increased by 27% from 7.1 to 9 Exabytes (around 9 million Terabytes). AMS-IX is currently operational in 11 data centres in Amsterdam. All or a large part of the data centre space in these locations is occupied, which is another indication of the strong growth of the Dutch digital infrastructure: research reports of CBRE (March, 2016) and the Dutch Datacenter Association (DDA) (June 2015) show that the Dutch data centre market is the strongest growing European data centre market. The choice for Equinix AM6 as the 12th data centre location was self-evident, given the available data centre capacity in the market combined with Equinix’ strong track record as an AMS-IX partner.

Further expansion of partnership
In their partnership, Equinix has helped AMS-IX to grow by attracting new clients as well as providing the required space to expand the platform. “In the last three consecutive years, we’ve been named Gold Partner by AMS-IX,” says Michiel Eielts, Managing Director Equinix Netherlands. “We are proud that they have chosen to locate their 12th PoP in our newest data centre. It’s a great expansion of our partnership.” Steenman confirms: “Equinix data centres are energy efficient by design, provide high quality connectivity and the highest level of security. They are suitable for mission-critical colocation and interconnection, which is why – after rigorous testing – they were awarded AMS-IX Certified status.”

The presence of AMS-IX in AM6 provides global peering opportunities and high quality, reliable connectivity to Equinix customers. Eielts adds: “Our Amsterdam data centres are business hubs for companies and organisations that together define the digital economy. Connecting to AMS-IX allows them to improve network performance and redundancy, and gives them access to a diverse and international peering community.”
