A10 Networks and Cylance join forces

A10 Networks and Cylance have formed a technology partnership designed to enhance cybersecurity for individual endpoints and users from the data centre to the cloud by incorporating cutting-edge advanced threat protection for encrypted traffic.

As a result of this OEM agreement between the two companies, announced at the Black Hat USA 2016 event in Las Vegas, the Cylance anti-malware engine will be embedded into A10 Networks’ SSL Insight and Thunder Convergent Firewall (CFW).

The partnership’s significance is marked by customers challenged in securing their networks due to malicious attacks hiding within encrypted web and email traffic— traffic that traditional security methods do not properly address. Newer security technologies, such as detonation of executable files, are effective for deep analysis but are not optimised for rapid block/allow decisions in network use cases. Additionally, the proliferation of dynamic content and unknown threats have also made traditional signature-based antivirus nearly obsolete and of little value.

This OEM agreement incorporates technology from A10 Networks, a leader in application networking and security, and Cylance®, a company that is revolutionising cybersecurity through the use of artificial intelligence to proactively neutralise advanced persistent threats and malware. The agreement will also expand A10 Networks’ security solution capabilities, enhancing security for endpoints and network services by offering an additional layer of protection in the network to predict and prevent malware and advanced threats with artificial intelligence-based file classification.

The combined A10 Networks and Cylance solution aims to fill the security gap by bringing together the best of secure application network technology with proactive prevention and detection of advanced persistent threats and malware. CylancePROTECT is an ideal complement for A10 Networks’ Thunder SSLi and CFW solutions, which offer very high-speed SSL decryption for end-user traffic, protection against malware even when encrypted and protection for incoming and outgoing email traffic.

“For more than a decade, A10 Networks has engineered our products to deliver secure, agile application networking technologies,” said Gunter Reiss, vice president, strategic alliances, A10 Networks. “Cylance's novel Nextgen AV will augment the innovative A10 Thunder SSLi and Thunder CFW solutions to offer increased security for governments, gaming companies, healthcare providers, financial institutions and other markets facing critical security threats.”

“With A10 Networks and Cylance as technology partners, customers can take advantage of next-generation anti-malware threat prevention at both the endpoint and the perimeter,” said Joel Bauman, vice president of corporate and business development at Cylance. “Cylance is pleased to partner with A10 Networks to provide a solution that not only delivers cutting-edge anti-malware capability through predictive artificial intelligence, but also acts to complement and optimise A10 customers’ existing investments in other security tools and processes.”

Expected to be available in early 2017, the integrated solution will be available as a subscription service to A10 customers and will offer:
?      Scalable line rate advanced threat processing
?      Predictive static file analysis using machine learning
?      Effective versus known and unknown/zero day threats
?      No signatures
?      Triage to existing security stack
?      Force multiplier to existing security stack
?      Prune known good and known bad files with high confidence
?      Pass the suspicious files for other components for detailed extraction and detonation analysis
?      Reduced infrastructure and operational costs by:
o    Decrypting SSL traffic at a very high rate and low cost
o    Pre-filter known good and known bad files and reduce load on the security stack
o    Right-sizing security stack to focus on deeper inspection of only “suspicious files”
