Raxio launches Ethiopian flagship

Tier III certified carrier-neutral facility in Addis Ababa provides cutting-edge infrastructure to support the region’s ambition for digital inclusion.

Raxio Data Centres has launched its newest facility in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. This milestone marks the expansion of Raxio’s commitment to providing secure, redundant, and innovative data centre solutions to meet the growing demands of the region.

Ideally situated in Ethiopia’s economic heart, in the country’s capital city of Addis Ababa, Raxio’s newest Tier III certified, state-of-the-art data centre will address the quickly-evolving needs of a vibrant business environment and public sector for dependable, always-on IT solutions. The facility offers secure colocation space for up to 800 racks delivering up to 3MW of IT power, providing a robust, fully-redundant environment for housing mission-critical IT infrastructure with 24/7 availability.

Bewket Taffere, General Manager of Raxio Data Centre in Ethiopia, stated, “The launch of our flagship facility in Addis Ababa represents a major milestone in our journey at Raxio, and for our country. We anticipate that this facility will be a catalyst for increased economic development in Ethiopia, supporting local businesses and government agencies, as well as attracting regional and international service and content providers into Ethiopia. Our Tier III certification is testament to the calibre of solutions we are providing, and delivers our customers with the assurances they require that their equipment is in the best possible hands.”

Digital development

Raxio’s newest data centre is expected to have a transformative impact for Ethiopia. As the country focuses on digital inclusion, Raxio’s Tier III facility will contribute significantly to extending the ICT infrastructure network, ensuring that the benefits of technology are accessible throughout the nation helping to improve access to educational, social, and business resources. Moreover, the launch of this flagship facility is expected to have a profound impact on local enterprises, providing them with a reliable, secure, and always-on environment for their critical IT infrastructure.

As a carrier-neutral data centre, Raxio Ethiopia will become one of Ethiopia’s hubs of connectivity creating an ecosystem where local and international carriers will be able to interconnect and exchange traffic, in an ideally-suited and purpose-built environment. In a hyper-connected, always-on environment, supported by diverse fibre routes, customers benefit from the choice of providers and are safeguarded from connectivity cuts. Such diversity and the ability to interconnect with each other such that local traffic remains local, also contribute to reducing costs of internet for business and, ultimately, end-customers.

The launch of Raxio’s data centre in Ethiopia is in full alignment with the Ministry of Innovation and Technology (MInT) Digital Ethiopia 2025 initiative and the Ministry’s core priorities, in particular by contributing to:

• ICT Infrastructure: Extending the ICT infrastructure network to cover the entire country for digital inclusion.

• Job Creation: Increasing job creation through ICT research and innovation.

• Information Security: Enhancing the Information Security System to be secure, reliable, resilient, and capable of responding to cybersecurity threats.

Robert Mullins, CEO of Raxio Group, expressed, “The launch of a new facility is always culmination of a long and, at times arduous, journey – a journey of dedication, hard work and bringing all our collective expertise at Raxio to bear. We are extremely proud to deliver such unique, first-of-its kind vital infrastructure to Ethiopia, and are convinced that it will support Ethiopia’s ambitious goals for its continued digital transformation and digital inclusion initiatives.”

Raxio Ethiopia is the first of several facilities Raxio plans to open in the next few months. Robert Mullins added, “This is hugely exciting time for us as a company. After our launch in Uganda two years ago, Raxio Ethiopia is the first in a series of facilities we will be opening between now and the end of the first half 2024, with our facilities in Mozambique, Ivory Coast and DRC next in line. With these facilities and more to follow later in 2024 and early 2025, we are continuing to execute on our promise of delivering world-class data centre infrastructure across underserved markets in Africa.”
