In a landmark collaboration, Rolls-Royce and INERATEC, a pioneer in Power-to-X technologies, have joined forces to revolutionise the power backup systems of data centres. Their ambitious target is to replace conventional fossil diesel with innovative synthetic e-Fuels derived from green hydrogen and carbon dioxide.

Emerging as major energy consumers, data centres are now at the forefront of the digital landscape, largely driven by the surge in artificial intelligence. As these hubs form a backbone of the critical infrastructure, their resilience against power interruptions is crucial. This is where the strategic alliance of Rolls-Royce Power Systems and INERATEC steps in. Together, they will initially introduce INERATEC's advanced e-Diesel technology to German data centres, offering a sustainable alternative to traditional fossil fuels.

Rolls-Royce Power Systems is primed to integrate INERATEC’s e-Fuels into their emergency power solutions, which promises a cost-effective, reliable, and CO2-neutral resolution to the power reliability concerns plaguing digital infrastructure.

“mtu backup generators from Rolls-Royce are already approved for operation with sustainable fuels. Customers in the critical infrastructure sector, such as data centres, who are aiming to reduce their carbon footprint, will soon also able to use e-fuels,” said Tobias Ostermaier, President Stationary Power Solutions at Rolls-Royce Power Systems.

“The secure energy supply for AI-powered data centres is one of the defining challenges of our time. Our e-Fuels offer a climate-neutral solution that is scalable, dependable and ready for immediate deployment,” said Maximilian Backhaus, Chief Commercial Officer at INERATEC.

The initiative will be spearheaded in Germany, benefiting from the convenient proximity of INERATEC's ERA ONE production facility in Frankfurt, facilitating swift deployment. Crafted from renewable energy and captured carbon, INERATEC's e-Fuels not only adhere to rigorous international environmental standards but also herald a new era for sustainable critical infrastructure.

Looking ahead, the aim is to expand this trailblazing collaboration globally, redefining the approach to powering essential digital nodes worldwide.
