Virgin Media O2 and Coventry City Council have enhanced their collaboration to expand the reach of the council's #CovConnects initiative. This pioneering digital inclusion programme focuses on rehoming gadgets previously used by businesses and public sector organisations, diverting them from electronic waste and into the hands of those in need across Coventry's communities.

The project aims to galvanise more local businesses and organisations in Coventry to contribute their surplus tech to the #CovConnects scheme. By doing so, they prevent useful devices such as phones, tablets, and laptops from ending up as e-waste and instead offer them a second lease of life. These efforts are part of a wider ambition to foster a sustainable circular economy where technology can be repeatedly reused within the city.

Over an 18-month period, the partners will motivate local entities to donate their unused devices while tackling obstacles that hinder tech from being repurposed. The project’s emphasis is on equipping Coventry residents with these devices, in collaboration with community groups, to cultivate a culture of reuse at a local level.

Furthermore, Virgin Media O2 and Coventry City Council will extend invitations to other authorities to participate in this initiative. Through a working group, they aim to circulate best practices and insights, fast-tracking device reuse throughout the nation.

Launched in 2022, Coventry's #CovConnects programme champions digital inclusion by aiding residents in their digital journeys through partnerships with local and national organisations. Key partnerships include those with NHS ICB Coventry and Warwickshire and the University of Warwick. Together, they refurbish and redistribute tech to citizens via a 'Device Bank', akin to a food bank, offering digital essentials like laptops and smartphones.

To date, over 4,700 devices have been redistributed through community groups, health providers, and front-line services. A robust safety protocol ensures donated devices are data-wiped in accordance with governmental standards, safeguarding donors and recipients.

Beyond device allocation, #CovConnects is transformative, reaching residents facing financial constraints, long-term health conditions, or challenging living situations. With  over four in ten Coventry citizens lacking access to a laptop, the programme serves as a lifeline, empowering participants to acquire new skills, engage in online learning, and maintain social connections, crucial for mental health and business development.

This revamped initiative further strengthens the alliance between the council and Virgin Media O2, backed by support from the operator’s 'Time After Time' fund, which allocated £1 million across community organisations focused on e-waste reduction and repair skill promotion. Virgin Media O2's commitment to driving a circular economy is evident in its efforts to champion eco-conscious reuse practices through the ‘Better Connections Plan’.
