Keysight Technologies partners with UT Austin to pioneer 6G digital twin research

6G@UT collaborates with Keysight Technologies to explore digital twins, reshaping wireless and autonomous systems.

Keysight Technologies, Inc., has announced their collaboration with the 6G@UT research initiative at the University of Texas at Austin. The partnership focuses on advancing research in digital twins, a transformative technology for 6G networks. This effort will unfold within the renowned Wireless Networking and Communications Group (WNCG) at UT Austin.

Digital twins allow for the creation of real-time, virtual near-replicas of physical networks, significantly impacting how researchers design, test, and optimise communication systems. By doing so, complex systems can be refined in a cost-effective and scalable manner before any real-world deployment.

At the heart of this research lies the concept of a "multiverse of digital twins." This involves parallel models operating across various fidelities and computing environments, spanning from cloud to device-level. Through such innovation, networks can be designed and optimised with unparalleled flexibility.

Keysight's solutions provide 6G@UT with essential tools to:

  • Integrate diverse data sources, including ray-tracing models and open-source datasets.
  • Calibrate digital twins with real-time measurements.
  • Simulate terrestrial and non-terrestrial communications.
  • Facilitate a zero-risk environment for testing breakthrough technologies.

Reflecting on this collaboration, Professor Kaushik Choudhury remarked on the foundational role that calibrated digital twins will play in forwarding research on next-generation technologies and their impact on future network designs.

Meanwhile, Professor Jeffrey Andrews highlighted the pioneering nature of this partnership, particularly in achieving more realistic models of dense LEO [low Earth orbit] networks and 6G cellular networks. Such advancements pave the way for training and validating superior machine learning and AI models.

Giampaolo Tardioli, Vice President at Keysight, sees UT Austin's lab as an innovation hub driving further inquiry into next-generation wireless technology through simulation-driven design.

The collaboration underscores Keysight's commitment to 6G advancement, supporting academic partnerships to redefine industries and interconnected systems for the future.
