Climate control solutions for historic London bank

A case study outlining ICS Cool Energy’s approach to addressing a cooling failure at a London bank.

A London banking headquarters experienced a cooling system failure that threatened daily operations. ICS Cool Energy provided a temporary solution to maintain system functionality.

The historic bank's landmark building experienced a failure in two main water-cooled chillers. This posed an immediate risk to the continuity of daily business at a site that holds historical and financial importance.

With limited access via two basement lifts, including a standard goods and a vehicle lift, the infrastructure presented significant challenges. Complicating matters further, the building's chilled water system operated at 9.2 bar, exceeding typical levels. Alternative providers suggested air-cooled systems with external equipment and generators, potentially creating regulatory and financial issues.

Adopting a consultative engineering approach, ICS Cool Energy installed a temporary water-cooled chiller solution within the basement confines. The team installed seven RTSF100 water-cooled chillers, interconnected with nearly 90 metres of stainless steel pipework designed to handle the high pressure. This avoided the need for external equipment, preserving basement access and adhering to regulatory standards.

Electrical work was handled internally, eliminating reliance on costly external fuel sources. Throughout installation, the team maintained acoustics and minimised disruptions by ensuring the new system operated more quietly than its predecessor.

The intervention ensured uninterrupted cooling, safeguarding the bank's operations and assets. Operating for nearly twelve months, the temporary solution surpassed the initial timeframe, allowing for permanent system redesign and replacement.

ICS Cool Energy delivered this solution in a regulated and technically complex setting.
