Maritime SOFC project targets low-carbon power

Delta Electronics, MODEC and Eld Energy collaborate on a maritime hydrogen energy project targeting 2027 deployment.

Delta Electronics has partnered with MODEC and Eld Energy to advance maritime energy solutions. The collaboration aims to deploy Solid Oxide Fuel Cell (SOFC) technology on Floating Production, Storage, and Offloading (FPSO) units, marking the first application of SOFC technology in this type of offshore deployment.

Under the agreement, Delta will supply components including Solid Oxide Stacks and Power Conditioning Systems, which are integral to Eld Energy’s SOFC systems designed for FPSO applications. The project targets a 120kW pilot trial by 2027 and is intended to introduce hydrogen energy into the maritime power sector.

The signing ceremony took place at Delta’s Tainan Plant 2. Dr. Charles Tsai, General Manager of Delta’s Hydrogen Energy Business Division, noted the company’s focus on providing energy-efficient solutions and the aim to integrate hydrogen technologies—including stacks and power management systems—into FPSO units.

Koichi Matsumiya, CTO of MODEC, highlighted the organisation's experience in floating production solutions and described the joint R&D initiative as a way to support stable offshore power while contributing to reduced carbon emissions.

Hans Fredrik Lindøen-Kjellnes, CEO of Eld Energy, stated that incorporating Delta’s Solid Oxide Stacks into their systems supports efficiency and stability. The collaboration also aims to assess the feasibility of SOFC mass production and its application in maritime decarbonisation.

Delta continues to focus on SOFC and Solid Oxide Electrolysis Cells (SOEC) technologies, with mass production of solid oxide components scheduled to begin by late 2026. The SOFC system achieves over 60% power generation efficiency, reaching up to 85% with heat recovery. These solutions are intended to provide low-carbon power for energy-intensive sectors, including data centres, semiconductor manufacturing, microgrids, and maritime operations.

Through this partnership, Delta, MODEC, and Eld Energy are advancing research and collaborative projects to support the transition toward low-carbon energy in maritime and industrial sectors.
