Red Hat's new digital sovereignty tool: a step towards control

Red Hat unveils its Digital Sovereignty Readiness Assessment tool to gauge organisational digital control and foster a global standard for digital sovereignty.

Red Hat, a provider of open-source software solutions, has launched a tool designed to evaluate an organisation's digital control and sovereignty. The Digital Sovereignty Readiness Assessment tool is intended to provide businesses with a baseline view of their digital autonomy.

The tool assesses seven domains, including Technical Sovereignty, Open Source Awareness, and Executive Oversight. After completing the assessment, organisations receive a maturity score along with a roadmap outlining potential improvement actions and questions intended to engage relevant stakeholders.

The seven domains examined by the assessment address different aspects related to organisational digital sovereignty. By reviewing these areas, organisations can gain an overview of their current digital environment and identify areas that may require further development.

  • Technical Sovereignty: Evaluates the organisation's technological infrastructure and its reliance on proprietary solutions.
  • Open Source Awareness: Assesses the level of engagement with and implementation of open-source solutions within the organisation.
  • Executive Oversight: Examines leadership awareness and the strategic consideration of digital sovereignty practices.

The tool has been released as open source. Red Hat has made the code and assessment criteria publicly available, with the intention of enabling organisations to use and adapt the framework when evaluating digital sovereignty.

The open-source approach allows organisations and contributors to review and modify the tool according to their requirements.

The Digital Sovereignty Readiness Assessment tool aims to provide a framework organisations can use to review and measure aspects of digital sovereignty. By making the tool available as open source, Red Hat is providing a resource that organisations can use when evaluating digital autonomy and related governance practices.

This release forms part of Red Hat’s broader work in the open-source ecosystem and its engagement with organisations addressing digital infrastructure and governance considerations.
