Specialist contractor Jones Weatherproofing has introduced a pledge outlining its approach to data centre weatherproofing. The company says the initiative is intended to provide a framework of best practices that could be considered by other specialists in the sector.

The UK is experiencing significant growth in data centre construction, with projections indicating investment of more than £10bn by 2029. As data centres are considered critical infrastructure supporting the digital economy, the development of robust standards for these facilities is an important consideration.

Weatherproofing data centres can present challenges due to the large number of vertical and roof penetrations commonly found in these buildings. These conditions often require solutions tailored to the specific requirements of each project. Jones Weatherproofing’s pledge sets out five principles focused on a bespoke approach, with an emphasis on workmanship and efficient processes intended to support both performance and appearance.

The pledge outlines the company’s collaboration with architects, M&E consultants and principal contractors. It also describes its approach to client communication, technical support and project guidance. In addition, it references the company’s quality standards and its 25-year warranty offering.

For penetration weatherproofing, traditional approaches may use plate-and-mastic systems. Jones Weatherproofing states that it develops customised solutions designed to accommodate a range of penetration sizes and shapes while maintaining building performance. The company also offers colour-matching options intended to align with architectural design requirements.

Jones Weatherproofing says it works with architects and M&E consulting engineers during the design stage of projects. As projects progress, the company collaborates with main and sub-contractors on weatherproofing requirements, energy-efficiency considerations and changes to penetration locations.

According to Jones Weatherproofing, this approach is intended to support the long-term performance of data centre assets and provide assurance to project stakeholders. The company suggests that wider adoption of similar practices could contribute to consistency in industry standards and protection of critical infrastructure assets.
