Lenovo has announced a partnership with the University of Southampton, a Russell Group institution in the UK. The collaboration will provide high-performance computing (HPC) infrastructure to support the University's research and innovation activities.
Under a four-year framework agreement, Lenovo has been appointed as the University's preferred supplier for HPC capabilities. The agreement supports the University's plans to expand its research computing capacity and its aim of returning to the global Top500 ranking of the world's most powerful supercomputers.
The agreement builds on a relationship between Lenovo and the University that has continued for more than a decade. An initial order worth approximately £7 million has been placed, with delivery planned for summer 2026. The investment is expected to increase the University's computational capacity to support research across a range of disciplines.
The first phase of deployment will include Lenovo ThinkSystem SR675 V3 servers equipped with NVIDIA H200 GPUs and NVLink technology to support AI and simulation workloads. A second phase will introduce a cluster based on NVIDIA Grace Blackwell architecture alongside Lenovo ThinkSystem SC777 V4 Neptune Servers, providing additional computing capacity and scalability.
In addition to infrastructure, the agreement includes research collaboration activities, with plans to support end-user computing capabilities and researcher engagement. Initiatives are also planned to encourage the adoption of newer technologies within the University's academic community.
The partnership is expected to support the University's research activities and its wider objectives, including collaboration with international research communities. The University is also due to host the British Science Festival in September 2026.
