NTT DATA has announced a partnership with Cargill to support operations through the deployment of its Private 5G network. The rollout is designed to enhance connectivity across 50 manufacturing and processing sites globally as part of Cargill’s connected workplace strategy, with further installations expected to be completed by 2026.

Cargill operates across large-scale agricultural processing plants, food manufacturing facilities and industrial sites, requiring secure and scalable connectivity. Traditional network infrastructures are often limited in such environments, and private 5G provides consistent, high-performance connectivity to support automation, robotics and digital operations in industrial settings.

As part of its digital transformation, Cargill is implementing SAP ERP across its facilities. The Private 5G network enables reliable, low-latency access to enterprise applications and operational data on mobile devices such as smartphones and ruggedised tablets. This supports real-time visibility of production processes, collaboration between frontline and operations teams, and faster data-driven decision-making.

Most deployments are in the United States, with live implementations also in Europe. Further regional expansion is being considered.

In addition to connectivity, Private 5G supports advanced robotics and physical AI applications. At its Amsterdam facility, Cargill has deployed “Spot the Dog,” an AI-powered robot used to improve safety and operational efficiency. The robot carries out visual inspections, monitors for risks such as equipment overheating, and assists with safety in areas that are difficult to access.

Robert Greiner, Director of Platform Engineering for Customer, Commercial & Business Operations Digital Technology at Cargill, said the collaboration supports the company’s broader digital transformation strategy by providing secure and scalable connectivity for connected workers, robotics and AI use cases.

Shahid Ahmed, Global Head of Edge Services at NTT DATA, stated that as manufacturing organisations expand the use of automation and AI, reliable and secure connectivity becomes an important foundation for digital operations. Private 5G is positioned as a technology that supports this requirement in environments where traditional networks may not be sufficient.
